Antibiotics do not treat viral infections

It is always crucial to follow prescription before taking medication. As far as self medication is concerned, there is an alarming misuse of anitbiotics.
As a matter of fact, wikipedia outlines that Antibiotic misuse, sometimes called antibiotic abuse or antibiotic overuse, is a contributing factor to the development of antibiotic resistance, including the creation of multidrug-resistant bacteria, informally called “super bugs”: relatively harmless bacteria (such as Staphylococcus, Enterococcus and Acinetobacter) can develop resistance to multiple antibiotics and cause life-threatening infections.[1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antibiotic_misuse
- Different targets: Antibiotics work by killing or inhibiting the growth of bacteria. Viruses have a different structure and life cycle, so antibiotics have no effect on them.
- Ineffective treatment: Taking antibiotics for a cold or flu will not cure the infection, stop you from feeling sick, or prevent you from spreading the virus to others.
- Harmful side effects: You can experience needless and harmful side effects from taking medication that is not needed.
- Antibiotic resistance: The overuse of antibiotics is a major cause of antibiotic resistance. This happens when bacteria evolve to become resistant to the drugs designed to kill them.
- Increased health risks: This resistance makes future bacterial infections harder to treat, posing a serious threat to public health.
- For viral infections: If you have a viral infection, your immune system will fight it off on its own. Your doctor may recommend treatments to help with your symptoms.
- For bacterial infections: Antibiotics are effective for bacterial infections, such as strep throat, but they should only be used when prescribed by a healthcare professional.
- Consult a doctor: Always consult a doctor for an accurate diagnosis and the correct treatment plan for your illness.
